Interview with Author Allia Zobel Nolan:

Thank you for visiting my blog today, Mrs. Nolan. Can you introduce yourself to our readers and share what inspired you to become an author? 

I’m delighted to be here and visit with your readers. My background is truly a Cinderella story. I started my career as a journalist, writing human interest pieces. During that time, I also wrote humorous pieces for The New York Times, and had two columns in local and national newspapers entitled, “Life with a Side of Whiskers,” as I often wrote about my cats. 

I sent one of my newspaper stories to a publisher without an agent…just one letter…to see if there was any interest in publishing it as a book. He called me and said yes, and after I let out a shout you could hear in Antarctica, which was the beginning of my career as an author. 

After that I got a position as senior editor for Reader’s Digest Children’s Books and began writing children’s books exclusively…although I did continue to write a few cat books on the side. Currently, I have over 150 titles to my name. Do I consider myself blessed? You bet. Still, writing was in my DNA. It was what I was meant to do. And I couldn’t be happier. 

Every author's journey is truly unique! Do you have any favorite children's picture books/authors who inspire you? 

Well, I’m an avid reader. From childhood, I always had my face in a book. Reading is my very favorite pastime. Some of the books I read and reread include Eloise at the Plaza…I used to imagine myself as Eloise. I loved and still do love and read lots of children’s poetry books; books like The Butterfly Jar by Jeff Moss, anything at all by Shel Silverstein. I read Jack Prelutsky’s Something Big Has Been Here, and lots of Dr. Seuss. I also loved Kate Camillio’s Because of Winn-Dixie. You know it’s difficult to pick out one or even some of my favorites, because I love them all. 

Those are some great picks! I think I often overlook children's poetry, but those are some iconic authors! I work as a children's librarian and a lot of people seem to assume that writing for kids is "easy." Can you walk us through the process of writing a picture book? 

Writing a picture book involves more than meets the eye, and the best authors make it look “easy,” though it is far from that. There’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than most people realize. I’d probably take a week to outline everything that goes into it. Still suffice it to say, the one thing an author must do to be able to write a good picture book for children, is to become one. The author has to hang up her adult thoughts and feelings, likes and dislikes, vocabulary and imagination, and slip on the persona of a child. She has to think like a child, use vocabulary a child would, dig deep for feelings and actions a child would have…. In essence, become five or six years old again. And you have to be sincere so your readers will know you’re not faking it. That may sound simplistic. On top of that, you have to guide the illustrator to do the same thing. 

That's so true, children can tell when you're sincere and authentic! What inspired you to write Harriet Hurry-Up and the Oh-So-Slow Day? 

I got the idea for this book out of the blue. I was expecting a check from a publisher and as I was walking to the mailbox to see if it had arrived, I thought to myself: Boy, I hate to wait. 

 And since I write books for children and am always looking for ideas to share with them, I thought learning to wait might be a good topic for children, because if I hate to wait, I could imagine they must feel the same way too. 

 The truth is we live in a fast-paced, door dash, instant gratification, I-want- it-now world, and this not only affects adults, but we oftentimes unknowingly transfer it to our young ones. 

 So, I wanted to write a book that showcases a Fancy Nancy type character, one children could relate to, who feels antsy and, in a hurry, most days, but has a real problem with waiting because (spoiler) it’s her birthday the next day. How does Harriet handle being anxious? She prays for patience and receives an answer in the form of a pound dog her Grannie brings home. Playing with the dog refocuses Harriet’s attention so she can live in the moment, enjoy a game of towel tag, and stop wishing away a day that seemed to drag on. 

That is a very good point about instant gratification and how fast-pace is now the norm in our culture. I was also an art major, so I have to ask about the art process ... How do you collaborate with illustrators? Do you choose who you get to work with or does your publisher match you together? What is your role in the illustration process? 

Well, because I used to be a senior editor at Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing, I got to know many wonderful, talented illustrators. Down through the years, I have kept files of them as well as any new artists I come across who would be a good fit for some of my ideas. So, I generally suggest two/three people and, thankfully, the publishers usually agree with my choice. I’m fortunate in that way, as most publishers pick the illustrator, and the author really has no say. The editor/publisher then finds out a) if this is something the illustrator wants to work on; b) if the illustrator can work within the budget and c) if he/she can work within the expected time frame. 

Next, comes the art brief. That is usually executed by the editor. But I like to write up the art notes myself. Then I pass it along to the publisher. Saves them time and effort because since I wrote the book, I have the vision of what the complimentary art should be. Now, I don’t stifle the creativity of the artist by giving them a blow-by-blow account of what I want…. Just rudimentary elements. For example, three kids of diverse ethnicity, aged about eight years old, are playing in the park. The artist takes it from there. Next, changes, if any, are made and when all is approved, the artist goes to final art. 

That's awesome that your publisher lets you have some input in selecting an illustrator. It sounds like you have a clear idea of what art you're looking for/envisioning to pair with your text. What advice would you give to someone who wants to write children's picture books? 

Research the topics you are thinking of writing about. See what’s out there; what’s trending; read what editors are looking for on writing blogs; go to writing conferences; or listen to authors who have instructional podcasts about writing for children; Spend time online or at bookstores looking/reading picture books; join a writer’s group and get feedback from them. And most of all, persevere. Don’t be afraid of rejection. It goes with the territory. 

I think most successful authors reach the publishing stage because of their perseverance! Are there any resources or techniques that you found particularly helpful in your own journey? 

I joined several writers’ groups and went to a few writers’ conferences. I took writing courses at the local college at night. Plus, there’s a plethora of information online so don’t be afraid to dig deeper. Browse bookstores. Books I recommend are: On Writing Well by William Zinsser, and the Elements of Style. And my absolute favorite, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Oh, and if you can’t find a writing group, start one yourself!

Hi Camy! Thanks for visiting The Artist Librarian.  What made you start writing Regency Romance? 

I have loved reading Regency Romances since I was 13 years old. I love the dresses and balls, the elegant culture and society, and the humor that often accompanies these love stories. My editor at my publisher at the time, Zondervan, knew about my love for Regencies and approached me about writing one under a pen name, so I jumped at the chance. My first Regency Romantic Suspense was Prelude for a Lord. 

I also fell in love with Regency set fiction as a teen!  It's all your fault, Jane Austen, haha! What inspired you to write the Lady Wynwood’s Spies series?

While I love Regency Romances and Jane Austen’s books, I also really love action movies. When plotting the rest of the series, especially in light of Sol’s clandestine job for the Crown, I realized that I really wanted to do a mash-up of Mission: Impossible in the Regency era! So I created Sol’s team of agents, some who used to work for the Foreign Office as spies and some who are civilians with unusual skill sets. And, of course, there will be lots of romance for each of the team members, as well as lots of action and suspense. 

Archer was such a fun read and I look forward to following the whole team (my full review will be posted next week in conjunction with Celebrate Lit's blog tour!) Why did you decide to do an epic serial novel? What exactly is an epic serial novel?

Originally I had written The Spinster’s Christmas, a Christian Regency Romantic Suspense stand-alone novel, and I had planned more stand-alone novels with Lady Wynwood and Sol as minor characters in each of them. However, as I began planning the series past that first Christmas book, I realized the storyline was becoming longer and more complex. I fought it for a while because it would have been a really long series—I even tried writing the next book as a stand-alone novel, but I wrote almost 90,000 words and I hadn’t even gotten to the 25% mark in the book! So I decided to structure the series like a Japanese light novel series, in which each book has a complete story arc, but there is an underlying story arc that runs through each of the volumes and isn’t resolved until the end. This is similar to the serial novels being published in the U.S., but those tend to be smaller installments of around 20,000 words, while each of the volumes in my series is around 100,000 words. I have already plotted the entire series and it will be 10 volumes, plus 1 side volume, 1 prequel, and a novella. 

I'm so thrilled that we will be getting 10 books in the Lady Wynwood's Spies series!  Also as a manga fan, I adore the illustrated version of The Spinster's Christmas because it really does give strong Japanese light novel vibes! How did you first become interested in writing? 

I’ve always loved reading, and my parents really encouraged me in my reading because both of them read a lot--my mom likes contemporary romance, women’s fiction, and suspense, and my dad likes science fiction and urban fantasy. One day, after reading Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey, I suddenly felt a burning desire to write my own fantasy book and I started work on it. I haven’t stopped creating stories in my head since. 

Ahhh, if you ever decided to publish fantasy, I'd totally be here for it! How great that your parents passed down their love of reading, I always enjoy seeing that as a librarian. What experiences in your background have contributed to your writing? 

Even though I loved writing, I set my writing down for several years because I felt God was telling me that I was more interested in fame than in writing for His glory. So in college, instead of majoring in English like a lot of writers, I majored in Psychology. It ended up being a really useful major because now when I write, I know how to make my characters seem very real and psychologically resonant with my readers. I’m not sure, but maybe that was God’s plan, for me to not be writing and so choose Psychology rather than English as my major, because He knew the Psychology degree would be more useful to me as a full-time author. 

It's always cool to see how clearly God can direct your path in hindsight even when you can't always in the moment ... Reflecting back, what do you see as most significant to your publication journey? 

At an ACFW conference (back when ACFW was American Christian Romance Writers), I went to the 
prayer room with friends and Brandilyn Collins prayed over me. I had been thinking about changing my ethnic-neutral characters to Asian characters but hadn’t told anyone about it, and certainly not Brandilyn. Yet as she prayed over me, she told me “write your heritage.” I knew then that God wanted me to write Asian American characters, which were scarce in the CBA at the time. I wrote a proposal for the Sushi Series, which was bought by Zondervan 18 months after that conference. If Brandilyn hadn’t prayed for me and told me that, I don’t know what direction my writing career would have gone.

Recently, I’ve felt God urging me to write Christian fiction for non-Christian women in Japan, which has a polytheistic religious culture. So I have started indie publishing and have been having my books translated into Japanese. I am slowly releasing the books in eBook and Print Book in international markets and I have been praying God leads hurting women to my books so that they can see what it is to trust in Jesus Christ.

Oh wow, I never knew that about your Sushi Series!  As one of the first (if not the first?) traditionally published CBA fiction series to feature a predominately Asian American cast and main characters, it really resonated to me to see part of myself "reflected" in those novels.  I don't know if you and your publisher get enough credit for how groundbreaking and ahead of it's time it was ... Lastly, if you had to pick only one Scripture verse for you as a personal theme, what would it be and why? 

I have a personal Scripture verse, John 12:32: (Jesus speaking) “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” It reminds me to lift up Christ in my writing, and He’ll be the one to draw people to deeper relationships with Him through my stories. It’s by His power alone that I write and that He accomplishes His purpose through me.

The Artist Librarian Review:
Reviews of previous titles in the trilogy:  The Choosing (#1) & The Calling (#2)

I was almost scared to read The Returning.  Let me explain --I have a love/hate relationship with Ted Dekker's novels.  He's a great writer and I was immersed in his worldbuilding and characters, but his series endings never gave me the satisfying conclusions I was personally hoping for.  For example, both the prequel/sequel Green in his Circle Series or what I personally felt was a disconnected, "did-this-have-to-be-written" last two novels of The Lost Books.  His series' finales never completely met the full potential that the previous books built up, leaving me bittersweet, slightly disappointed feelings toward his series.  I realize that this doesn't really have anything to do with his daughter, Rachelle Dekker, but irrationally, all of this was in the back of my mind as I began to read The Returning.  Fortunately, Rachelle's Seer Trilogy closes with a satisfying, though some might say quick, conclusion.

I was taken aback for a moment when I first heard that The Returning would take place 20 years after The Calling.  I was fully expecting book three to continue immediately after.  Though Carrington and Remko have roles in this book, the main character truly is Elise, who we last saw as an infant.  New characters, such as the seven young people chosen to infiltrate Authority City, were great.  I wish we had more time to learn more about them --Kennedy and Kane Brant, Elise's younger sister and cousin, along with Willis Lane, the son of one of the Authority members, were the most highlighted of the Seven, though even then, I still wanted to know more.  Maybe some e-novellas or short stories could be possible ... I definitely would enjoy that!

In my previous reviews, I mentioned that though this is a Christian dystopian trilogy, I felt that it still could crossover to the mainstream market without being being "preachy."  The Returning felt like it had more blatant spiritual elements of this trilogy because of constant referrals of embodying light and darkness.  Personally, as a Christian, these elements really stuck out to me, but there were also things that weren't clear enough to be distinctly "Christian" --it seemed like the spiritual elements focused on finding the light within yourself and though it's inferred that the light was given or placed there by the Creator or a higher power, it's abstract enough that it might not sit well with some Christians theologically.  I give it pass since it's a fantasy world, but it did personally give me a slight pause, like something was "off."  Also, the light and darkness gave people supernatural powers that made it seem "too easy" at times, but again, this is a fantasy novel ... However, I did like the emphasis Dekker placed that even "the bad guys" or those who were consumed by darkness also were originally "children of light" and could still be redeemed.  In the current world we live in, I think it's good to keep the perspective that God loves all people, even those who oppose him.  If the main theme of The Choosing was identity and The Calling's was fear, I think The Returning's theme is forgiveness ...  

Overall, I enjoyed the Seer Trilogy and am intrigued to see what Rachelle Dekker will write next!

Set the scene for The Returning. What has happened since The Calling ended?

Well, it’s been nearly 20 years, and the world has changed. I don’t want to give too much away  for those who haven’t read the first two, so I’ll just say the world is very different and much more dangerous than it once was. But something is brewing under the surface. Change is coming, and people know it.

I admit, the 20 year time-skip threw me off when I initially heard about it --I really expected book 3 to continue pretty close to the end of The Calling! =)

The Returning focuses on Carrington and Remko’s daughter Elise. Tell us more about
Elise’s character and her growth throughout the book.

Elise starts the book in a pretty dark place. She grew up without parents, believing she was abandoned, only to discover there’s an entire world that has been kept from her. Her journey can be divided into two parts, in my opinion: first, learning who she really is; and second, learning how to live that out. It’s the same journey we all take, and I believe that makes her pretty relatable.

I really wanted to follow Carrington and Remko at first, but I really enjoyed reading about Elise and the other "new" characters.

Aaron is a somewhat mysterious character throughout the series. What is he supposed to represent and what kind of spiritual leader is he?

I like to leave this one open, which I know isn’t really the answer you want. I want the reader to decide who he is to them. For me he’s a guiding light, an angel maybe, a representation of the spirit who communicates with us and leads us. He can be many things — mostly, though, he’s a great way to hear truth.

LOL, you're right, but I'll accept it!  Last question: How do you hope this book will resonate with your readers?

I hope, as with both of the other books, that the reader sees themselves in the characters and that the story causes them to look inward. To ask hard questions like, Who am I? What am I capable of? Do I see myself the way the Father does? Can I? I hope it challenges their idea of identity and then gives them hope to see themselves and others more clearly. Because that’s how these stories have impacted me, and we are all really just the same.

These are the desert elves, so their clothes reflect that with a Middle Eastern flare.

Within the realms of the dwarves, you will find Germanic influences such as clothing inspired by the dirndl and lederhosen.The Igazin of Kvazkhun wear bright and bold colors, but the clothing of the Stozic dwarves of Ta’vazi are more subdued. Common fabrics among these two clans are wool and leather. Mohair is the specialty of the Klovan dwarves of Stratuvec.

Since these feline-shapeshifters live on the edges of the Zriab Desert, their clothing reflect an Egyptian and Indian influence. Thin linens, silk, or chiffon-like fabrics are popular, depending on their position in society. Sheath-style dresses are common as well as salwar kameez-inspired outfits.

The Haruzo of Arashel

These feline-shapeshifters live in the northern reaches of the Kha Vaaro Mountains. Their clothing resembles a Celtic and Scottish-feel.

Then there is the merfolk. Clothing did not become important to them until trade grew between the nations. They developed a special silver fabric that repels water and won’t interfere if they choose to wear it while they swim. Mermen wear wrap-like kilts, the merwomen wear short robes inspired by traditional Asian clothing.

The Artist Librarian Review:
In The Choosing, one of the characters I wanted to learn more about was Remko Brandt, so when I found out he was the main protagonist of The Calling, I was thrilled.  In The Calling, he's much more fleshed out as a character, moving beyond simply being Carrington Hale's love interest (and now husband).  It's a roller-coaster of emotions following Remko's and the rest of the Seers' (followers of Aaron and his Father) journey throughout the novel.  Dekker isn't afraid to ... remove characters from the story, so that feeling of, "no one is safe," kept me on the edge of my seat. 

New characters were also introduced in The Calling.  My favorites were Wire (the teenage tech expert) and Jesse (a young lone archer with a mysterious past).  While The Choosing honed in on the search for a serial killer, the suspense in this novel stems from much more intrigue.  My emotions are shot after reading this --as I got to know the rebel Seers, I didn't want to think of any of them betraying the group.  With hidden agendas, betrayals, and subterfuge, the stage is being set for an intense finale.

The only things I found incredulous were decisions made by a certain character near the climax.  Though it was believable that it could possibly happen if someone gave up hope, I couldn't wrap my head around it.  I basically wanted to give that person a slap on the head, but I digress ...

While The Choosing focused more on identity, The Calling mainly deals with fear.  This is one place where Dekker's writing really shines.  While the spiritual and conceptual elements of the novel are very strong, in context they are believable and it didn't feel too preachy.  I think it could easily cross over into the general market if the spirituality (with echoes of Christian themes) are seen as part of the worldbuilding.  While especially applicable to YA or teens because of the concepts of identity and fear, I feel that adult audiences would enjoy the novel as well.  It feels a bit more deeper than your ordinary YA dystopian. 

I appreciate that both of the novels in Dekker's Seer Trilogy thus far have had satisfying closures. While of course there were unfinished threads, they weren't major cliffhangers.  I didn't feel betrayed or played with, like a gimmicky "I can't believe the author ended the book like this!"  That being said, you will want to know what happens next --thank goodness book 3 comes out later this fall!

This book is written from Remko’s perspective. Did you face any challenges writing from a male point-of-view? 

There was definitely a looming pressure as I started to write the book. As a woman writer, I wanted to make sure Remko felt masculine and authentic, so I was constantly aware of how he sounded, and how he reacted. Once I got into a flow with his character though, it started to feel more familiar I didn’t have to think about it as much.

In the book you talk a lot about surrendering to fear. What does this look like and how does this help us to not be afraid? 

I think sometimes the natural reaction to fear is to hide from it, or try and push it away. It’s the idea that if we can’t see it then it must not be there, but we all know that unless dealt with the unseen things often come back to bite us. The only way to face fear is to walk through it; surrendering to Father God and letting Him reminder us of our true identity. Only then do we really see that the light within us is always greater than the fear we face.

The theme of identity from The Choosing continues in The Calling. Carrington reminds herself, “When you know who you truly are, you realize there is no war left to fight at all.” How does this statement apply to our Christian faith?

For me this is simply a reminder that God is still God. Regardless of my circumstance or how I view the world, the Father is constant and hasn’t changed. He has already won the fight, already conquered death, already set me free. It’s only when I forget who He calls me and who He is that I feel the need to fight against life instead of surrendering to Him and letting Him be God. 

Do you relate to any of the characters in The Calling in terms of how you’ve faced and handled fear in your life? How so? 

Of course, every character I write ends up having some reflections of things I’ve faced personally. You can only write what you know, as they say. I, very much like Remko, have the tendency to be in “my head” too much when faced with fear, and I struggle to let go of the need for control and simply surrender. That’s one of the main reasons I decided to write this story. 

What do you hope readers will take away from the story? 

I hope they take a moment to see themselves as children of the Father. I hope they see that true freedom and fearlessness rest in surrendering, and that when they stand with the Father than nothing can stand against them. There is incredible peace in that truth, and I hope, like I am beginning the experience, that readers feel that same peace. 

What can readers expect in the final book of the series?

Characters they know and some new ones I hope they’ll love! More questions of identity, and fear, but the characters will also be looking at forgiveness and letting go. I’m really happy with the way the final book played out, and I’m hoping readers will be as well.

Ruthy, thanks for stopping by The Artist Librarian!  It seems like you've published hundreds of Love Inspired books. :-P Was anything different about writing or publishing a full length novel with Waterbrook Multnomah?

Jen, I’m so glad to be here!!!! I feel like I’m truly in Hawaii!!!!! :-)  Well, yes and no. I’d already started doing big books with Franciscan Media, and they published Refuge of the Heart last September (2015) and just published More Than a Promise this past week, so that was exciting! And dipping my toes in with them and Waterbrook was just plain fun. Waterbrook had changed their schedule after contracting me, so normally we wouldn’t have two books releasing within two weeks of each other, but I honestly think it’s advantageous to both stories because first: They’re so different! One is more of a women’s fiction romance…

And Back in the Saddle is more of a family saga romance, imagine “Bonanza” meets “Dynasty”… three motherless men, a father who has created a dynasty out of angry, restless energy, and the loss of mothers for all three boys-now-men… So for this one, I was able to delve into family and town relationships much more than in a Love Inspired story. 20,000 words extra is a big deal, right?

But this wasn’t hard at all. I’ve always written longer stories, and when Love Inspired contracted me, I had to learn to write with that quicker curve… and I did it! Help from Seekers and Melissa Endlich to coach me along the way, and it worked!

Ah, that's right!  I totally forgot Refuge of the Heart was published last year ... With my art background, I have to ask: What was the book cover design process like for you as the author? How much input (if any) did you have in the final cover art?

Waterbrook was marvelous about the covers. First…. Um, GORGEOUS!!!! Colt’s cover is totally perfect for his story, the prodigal coming home to what he knew first. Yeah, he left in anger… but it will always be home because that’s how it is. You can come home again… you can mend relationships… you can make choices… So I love this story for all of those reasons! Then when the cover is done, I have approval rights, and who in THEIR RIGHT MIND would diss that cover???

No one.

So that was fun!

I think the cover definitely fits too!  It sort of reminds me of Diana Palmer's book covers (I remember shelving her contemporary cowboy romances at the library all the time).
Why should people read fiction? Why do you write fiction?

Let’s answer the second question first. I write fiction because I have always, always, always wanted to tell stories. From the time I was a little kid, I made things up constantly. I thought I was normal. (See, that’s a misconception so many of us have, because to us WE ARE NORMAL…). :-)  But to the rest of the world, we might be considered borderline nut jobs with voices in our heads. Now the voices are paying me to develop them, and I’m okay with that! And Jesus was the ultimate story-teller. He taught with stories.

I do, too.

He showed better ways and better choices by analogizing and creating parables.

I do that, too. And here’s why: I was a poverty-stricken kid from a very shoddy background. Books were my escape. Books were my balm in Gilead. Books took me out of the crazy I lived, and tucked me into a reality I longed for.

If nothing else, books should always be around to help heal the hearts of today’s children, just like they helped heal mine… and develop my fighting spirit!... so long ago.

Aw, I'm trying to imagine a "little Ruthy" now ... ;-) What inspired you to write this story?

Money.

I’ve been dying to do a cowboy series and when Waterbrook seemed interested, I developed the idea for them and they bought it. But the long story is…

During the crash of 2008 I saw lots of young college educated investors go home. My two sons in New York City watched their friends' jobs dissolve out from under them. All those years of college and training, gone. And there was little recourse.

(they are all re-employed now, though, and a few have gotten married!)

Seeing that, I wanted to create a reason for a man who wiped the dirt of his hometown off his heels (much like Jesus did and instructed his disciples to do) to have to go home… and to realize it wasn’t quite as bad as he remembered. And that goes back to a grown-up vs. a child’s perspective.

Oh, I'm glad they were able to find jobs again!  The city or the country and why? ;-)

Both. I was raised in Rochester when it was a great city to raise a family. I’m no stranger to city living. But I’ve been on a farm for almost thirty years, so this is ingrained now, too…

I love both. If I had to leave the farm today, I could tuck myself into a city neighborhood and do fine as long as I had a little spot for a garden. I love going to big cities, I love going to New York, I can walk for hours and hours and hours and just love on the craziness… but then I’m always happy to come back to the green and golds of the country.

Ooh, I had a feeling you'd choose country (guess I'm only half right though, LOL). Back in the Saddle features cowboys --do you have any favorite westerns (any media: book, tv, film)?

Oh, gosh, I love westerns. I love those old John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart westerns, and I’m over the moon in love with Lonesome Dove… And of course Tombstone…. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance… The Snowy River movies from Australia. My whole family LOVES those! Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton??? Great romance! Dances With Wolves? Oh be still my heart. I could go on naming them for a long time, and my husband would count all the Clint Eastwood movies… I’m not as big a fan, but I did love Unforgiven…

Can you give us a hint on what you're working on next?

Oh my stars, yes! I’m in a spring collection with two other “Year of Weddings” authors and our print copy is coming out in April! “Toss the Bouquet” is me with Janice Thompson and Amy Matayo, doing romance from inside the wedding industry! My story “All Dressed Up in Love” is based on the great things I learned in eight years of being a bridal consultant… so much fun, Jen!

Home on the Range and Peace in the Valley are done, and I’ve got my third Franciscan book coming out in September, The First Gift and my second Grace Haven book, “Her Unexpected Family” (Love Inspired, I love my Love Inspired books!) coming out in August and then there are two Christmas novellas coming in the fall… One historical collection (can’t name names, contracts aren’t signed yet) and a contemporary collection from St. Martin’s Press…. And you know I love writing Christmas stories! So that’s plenty for one year, right??? :-)

Right now I’m working on things for next year… Rory’s story for Grace Haven #3 and I’m working out details on a fun trilogy concept that might just catch someone’s eye… if they like sweet towns, quirky characters and heart-tugging romance with babies!!!
