The Artist Librarian Review:

The Old Testament Handbook is a high quality, well made book that any Bible-believing bibliophile would love to have in their collection. As a public librarian, I've seen too many poorly bound titles last only a handful of check outs before needing repair (looking at you IDW trade paperback graphic novels), but B&H's Old Testament Handbook features a durable-looking Smyth-sewn binding and an elegant, minimalist cover design and treatment. The interior of the book has a modern design with appealing full color graphics and charts, along with eye catching abstract nature photography utilized in chapter headings and other details. The content is accessible and at under 250 pages, is less intimidating than more robust Bible study resources.

Almost every Old Testament book is featured with overview similar to what you may see in a study Bible, along with an outline, key words, and various charts or visualizations related to that specific book. The attractive way information is presented reminds me of DK's award-winning non-fiction books. My favorite part are the key word studies that highlight and explain original Hebrew words used in Biblical text. My only gripe with the handbook is that it lumps all twelve of the "Minor Prophet" books together into one chapter. My pastor has been teaching our midweek Bible study on the minor prophets' books this year (we've covered Hosea to Nahum so far) and it's been such a deep dive learning more about them ... I feel like they definitely should have highlighted the last twelve Old Testament books individually. Lastly, while I wasn't very familiar with the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) translation which this handbook uses when quoting Scripture, so far I have not come across anything that seemed inaccurate or out of place. While it won't take the place of a good Bible commentary, it is a beautifully crafted resource for those who want to delve a bit deeper beyond their daily Bible readings.

The Artist Librarian Review:
Coloring God's Love for Me: 100 Devotions to Inspire Young Hearts, is part activity book and devotional that is just right for lower elementary school students in 1st-3rd grade. There are 100 "promises" for young readers (e.g. "God Calls Me By Name," "I Can Bless Others," "God Lights My Path" to name a few). Each promise contains a short Bible verse or passage, a 3-4 paragraph devotional based on the verse, and a full page coloring sheet, or activity/journal prompt. I found the devotionals to be age-appropriate, but was slightly disappointed to see the coloring pages were mostly licensed from clip art type websites, which explained the slightly disparate look with some coloring pages having a kawaii look, while others had a more intricate "adult coloring book" vibe, and then there was some word art, along with some traditional coloring book images. However, I think most kids will not care nor notice this like a former art major such as myself. The majority of the images and graphics for the coloring pages fit the theme of each devotional and I can envision many kids enjoying this book as their first devotional experience (and having fun being creative with the coloring as well).

Thank you for visiting my blog today, Pastor LaPierre! To start off, can you please tell us about the inspiration behind your book, Your Finances God's Way? Why would a pastor write about finances? Some may say that's beyond your area of expertise ...

Good questions! To put it simply, I would write about finances, because the Bible talks so much about finances, and my responsibility as a pastor is to “Equip the saints for the work of the ministry” (Ephesians 4:11-12).

Maybe someone would say a pastor should write about finances, because it doesn’t seem very spiritual. But I would say that God’s Word determines what is and isn’t spiritual, and if something occurs frequently in Scripture, then it is spiritual.

Regarding finances being beyond my area of expertise I will be the first to say that I’m not an expert on many topics. This is one reason I am so committed to telling people what God’s Word says versus sharing my opinion. God is the expert in all things, and so when we tell people what He has said then we are doing people a great service and no earthly expert would have more to offer.

Well said, Pastor LaPierre. As a Millennial, I see many of my peers around me worried about things like student loans, being able to afford a house, and how to provide for a family as they contemplate marriage. What advice would you give people in the twenties and thirties regarding finances?

Whenever I speak to young people I try to stress the same point to them, that they must take advantage of the time value of money. Time, versus money itself, is the greatest tool they have to increase the value of money. The sooner they start, the greater their return. This also means that procrastinating is one of the greatest threats to making money. The longer you put off investing, the more money you lose.

Contrast Peter and Paul and consider these examples:

Peter is 30 years old and he invests $200 per month at 7 percent interest. When he turns 60, he will have $244,000.
Paul is 20 years old and he invests $200 per month at 7 percent interest. When he turns 60, he will have $525,000.
Starting 10 years earlier results in more than twice as much money—a difference of $281,000.

Dave Ramsey said, “The current average annual return from 1926, the year of the S&P’s inception, through 2011 is 11.69%.” Assuming the stock market continues the same pattern it has shown historically, consider these examples:

Paul invests $2,000 per year starting at 19 years old. When he turns 26, he does not invest another penny, which means he invested $16,000 over 7 years. When he turns 65, he will have $2,288,996.
Peter invests $2,000 per year starting at 27, the year after Paul stopped investing, and continues until he’s 65, which means he invested $78,000 over 38 years. When he turns 65, he will have $1,532,166.
Although Peter invested almost five times as much as Paul over five times longer than Paul, he has over 30 percent less money.

Wow, that's a huge difference! Investing is definitely something I'll need to look into. As I started to read your book I was struck by the emphasis of living frugal, modest lives. How do we get into that mindset, especially when it seems so counter to the influencer, consumer-culture world we often see around us?

Good question! If you’re like me, you probably read verses about riches and covetousness and think they apply to others, but not you. Yet if you live in America, measured by the living standards of the rest of the world, and especially those throughout history, you live in the wealthiest nation that has ever existed. America enjoys staggering material prosperity. Take, for instance, the average household wealth, which is the money available to invest, save, or spend after income taxes. This is less than $17,000 per household in Russia, $60,000 in France, $83,000 in the United Kingdom, and $86,000 in Canada. The nation in second place is Switzerland with $128,000. The United States is first with $176,000, or 40 percent more than the second-place finisher. Now, many of us don’t see nearly that amount of money in our household, but on average, you can see where we stand globally with our wealth.

The US poverty threshold for a family of five is $30,500, which means if a family makes less than this, they’re considered living in poverty. The official poverty rate in the United States is 12.3 percent (approximately 39.7 million people). The average global income for a family of five is about $10,500, which means Americans in poverty still make about three times more than the average for the rest of the world.

I share all this, because it is going to make modesty and frugality difficult for most of us. I believe the solution is to have our minds renewed by God’s Word. As we are sanctified, which is to say we become more like Christ, we will become more content and self-controlled. It will be easier for us to deny ourselves and recognize the purchases we should avoid.

Very true, the Christian life is often counterculture to how the rest of the world lives ... Besides the Bible, are there any other books, authors, podcasters, or other online resources about finances that you recommend people check out after reading Your Finances God's Way?

I appreciated The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. God used this book in my wife’s life on our honeymoon. She had been quite the spender, but after reading this book she was committed to seeing us pay off all of our debt.

I attended a Dave Ramsey financial class after I graduated and it was a great way to create a financial plan as I entered the workforce for the first time! Lastly, I was an art major, so I have to ask: Can you talk about the book cover design process from your point of view as an author? How much input did you have in the final design (if any)?

Harvest House is the only publisher I have worked with, so I can’t tell you what others do. But I can tell you I enjoyed their approach. They sent me five sample covers to choose from, and they told me which one was the marketing team’s favorite. That’s the one I ended up choosing. After that cover was chosen we were able to go back and forth with any small changes I wanted to make. I was happy with the finished product.

Sounds like a great method to get a book cover that both the graphic artist and the author can be proud of! Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about? What's next for you?

Thank you for asking! Living God’s Way is my brand. I am looking forward to publishing another “God’s way” book. I am thinking about the topic of contentment. I believe it flows well from the discussion of marriage and finances in my previous two books and workbooks.

I have been a huge fan of Phylicia Masonheimer ever since I stumbled onto one of her blog articles that had been shared by a friend on social media. Back then, she blogged as "Phylicia Delta" and her relevant posts on sexuality and singleness through a Christian perspective helped me so much as she challenged the church to be more open on the topic. I've bought all of her books over the years, but when I found out about The Flirtation Experiment, I thought maybe it wouldn't be relevant to me as an unmarried person. Fortunately, I was very wrong! I think married and single people alike can both learn from Phylicia and her co-author Lisa Jacobson as they share honest stories from their lives and how their "flirtation experiments" helped grow their marriages.

In this book, Masonheimer and Jacobson alternate on 30 brief chapters each covering one of the traits or attributes they wanted to focus on with their husbands. Some are what you'd commonly think of with a "flirtation" --affection, playfulness, delight, etc. but others go deeper by covering vulnerability, refuge, affirmation, and more. Each chapter opens with a short vignette of an event in the author's marriage, followed by a short essay focused on the attribute and how it relates biblically, then how the author ran her "experiment" and the effect on her marriage, and closes with some other ideas for readers to implement in their own lives.

As a single person, I read this book as a way to learn from the experiences and lives of Christian women who are farther along their journey than myself (and happen to be married). Masonheimer has been married for 8 years, while Jacobson has been married for 28, and both ladies' writing were candid in a conversational style that was easy to read. While they both talk about how wonderful marriage is, they don't glamorize it either, and what stood out to me was that love is a constant choice, the importance of intentionality, and focusing on God as our fulfillment rather than a spouse. While I think that a husband could also read this book and run a "flirtation experiment" themselves, I think the authors focused on wives because as Christian women, we may have heard or been taught that pursuing or being proactive in marriage is unbiblical, but Masonheimer and Jacobson make the case otherwise through Scripture. I also appreciated that the authors both emphasized that if you were in any sort of abusive relationship, this book was not for, and could not help your marriage and to seek professional assistance. Even though I can't currently use this book myself the way it was intended, I will be sharing it with other married people in my life, and I think it would make a nice wedding shower gift as well.

The Artist Librarian Review:
While I am definitely a manga and anime fan, I always hesitated to label myself an "otaku" because I haven't read or watched a lot of titles. Despite this, I knew I had to get a copy of Finding God in Anime: A Devotional for Otakus (which as of this writing is still a FREE Kindle ebook via Amazon) when Laura and Moriah first announced this project! With 36 devotionals total, it is perfect to use as a daily devotional for a month or can be read in one sitting. Even though I only read/watched a handful of the series featured, I was at least slightly familiar with about half of all the series and hadn't heard of only a couple. Despite this, there were no major spoilers shared (a very good thing) and it was fun to see what insights other Christians were able to glean from these series and expand upon with Scriptures. The anime featured were a good mix of titles that ranged from childhood favorites such as Pokémon and Sailor Moon, mega popular series like My Hero Academia, Naruto, or Attack on Titan, and more obscure titles like Cat's Eye or Run with the Wind. Otaku old and new should all find something to enjoy in this anime-themed devotional and will perhaps discover some new series to look into further as well!
